How To Climb The Spiritual Ladder

Living the Christian life is hard. Sometimes it feels as if we are on an impossibly large ladder, working our way towards fellowship with God. But in working so hard to climb the spiritual ladder of “sanctification”, we can so easily miss true, Spirit-led sanctification. Instead, the gospel of Jesus gives us an amazing paradigm shift. Theologian Richard Lovelace (Th.D, Princeton) says in his book Dynamics of Spiritual Life:

“Ladders are always intimidating, and it is my suspicion that Christians should always assume that they start each day at the top of the ladder in contact with God and renew this assumption whenever they appear to have slipper a rung. The Triple Way of classical mysticism, which move from the stage of cleansing one’s life through illumination toward union with God, seems to reverse the biblical order, which starts from union with Christ claimed by faith, leading to the illumination of the Holy Spirit and the consequent cleansing through the process of sanctification… True spirituality is not a superhuman religiosity; it is simply true humanity released from bondage to sin and renewed by the Holy Spirit”
